Sutton in Ashfield
PROJECT STATUS: Project ongoing
REGENERATION STRAND: Town Centres & High Streets
Properties have been purchased on Low Street at the heart of Sutton in Ashfield to be repurposed for residential on the upper floors, and businesses, education, and youth hub support on the ground floor.
One of the properties was completed in May 2023 when the council transformed the old Yorkshire Bank from a dilapidated eyesore to a modern building fit for new businesses. Below shows how 14 Low Street looked before and after the transformation.
The ground floor of the building at 14 Low Street was split into two commercial units that have been let to entrepreneur, Tricia Ironside, who also runs the successful Mill Waters Café at Kings Mill Reservoir.
The building has received a new lease of life opened as Rendezvous Café and Bar, which offers training and work experience for Portland College and Vision West Notts College students as part of their curriculum.
Tricia worked with pupils from Vision West Notts College to design the menus and upcycle the furniture for the café. She has taken on three hospitality students from Portland College who will be gaining valuable real-life experience in the café working on food preparation, customer service, and waiting tables.
Renovation works started in November 2023 at 9-11 Low Street, Sutton, which is the second empty shop to be worked on by the council. Ashfield District Council purchased the former YMCA shop as part of their £6.27million Future High Streets Fund.
Plans for 9-11 Low Street include refitting the interior of the shop unit to bring it back to a useable commercial space, installing energy efficiency measures, and renovating the first floor into modern, quality accommodation.
